My favorite thing about art history is opening a book, seeing a painting, or reading artists’ quotes and finding out that they were tortured souls just like me. They struggled, felt failure, and felt triumph at times too. To me, artists from the past are like compatriots in history, cheering me on today.

I loved Tree of Life from the first.

I was also emotionally involved with Days of Heaven, and now The New World.

I’ve seen Badlands,

and I have yet to see Thin Red Line. This is my first time exploring movies by director/creator instead of actors or subject matter.

So far, I have to say I’m a fan of Terrence Malick. I have no choice but to be :)

The Turin Horse, 2011 Bela Tarr.

I am all for snooty arthouse movies. I couldn’t get into this one though. I felt no compassion for the human characters— just couldn’t identify with them. Seemed to me the horse had more soul than anyone else. And I wouldn’t exactly call the film “gripping” either. That said, there are some powerful still images to be found in the film. The soundtrack, however is nightmarish for me.

the other being when James is convinced to take the picture with the newlyweds, and he walks away from the camera and the nervous bride takes his seat. The camera remains on that spot while he steps away.

I live in the 'burbs of DC (or just past, depending on your cityfolk-cred), and I saw the post where you said art school was rough on your creativity. I've been here almost 7 years, and I think it's partly the city, too. This city is rough on artistic vision, I think. But, hi. And take heart. =)
